COLLECTING IN MAY
Hunger can affect people from all walks of life. Millions of people in America are just one job loss, missed paycheck, or medical emergency away from hunger.
HCS Family Services, a local nonprofit organization, steps in during these difficult life situations to prevent food insecurity and create an improved quality of life for their neighbors in need. They provide food to over 400 families on a weekly basis, with twice weekly drive-thru service at their Hinsdale food pantry and once a week in Willowbrook.
HCS is part of the emergency food program through their affiliation with the Northern Illinois Food Bank where they can purchase $8.00 worth of food for every $1.00 donation. As they anticipate possible cuts at the food bank, along with reductions in SNAP and Medicaid benefits, HCS’ neighbors will become more reliant on their services. In light of this uncertain future, HCS is building new relationships with area grocers through their Food Rescue Program. Adding stores such as Amazon Fresh and Aldi to their existing partnership with a dozen local retailers, places significant amounts of fresh, nutritious food on kitchen tables instead of in landfills.
