Henri Nouwen, “‘Did I offer peace today?…”

The Weekly Word:
is an invitation to reflect on how God speaks to us through poetry, literature, and the visual arts. Share your reflections in the comments so that we can join together on this journey of faith throughout the week.

Henri Nouwen
“‘Did I offer peace today? Did I bring a smile to someone’s face? Did I say words of healing? Did I let go of my anger and resentment? Did I forgive? Did I love?’ These are the real questions. I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow now will bear many fruits, here in this world and the life to come.”

For Reflection:
On this World Communion Sunday, and throughout this week, how will you answer these questions by beloved priest and author Henri Nouwen? In what ways will you offer “that little bit of love” to your neighbor this week so that it might bear fruit? What stories about Jesus will you keep in mind as you try to stay present to this challenging task of offering peace to others?

  1. With the tragedy in Las Vegas, I feel called more than ever to do what I can do to “offer peace today”.

    • Thank you Jeff. Yes, in times of tragedy and horror, Nouwen’s words are all the more challenging.
