At Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas the HUMC congregation has traditionally collected 24 boxes of food and 24 five-pound hams to be distributed by Olivet UMC to the people of their neighborhood in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on Chicago’s West Side. In the last few years we have also given a box of food and a ham to the Bridge Communities family that is sponsored by HUMC. Clearly, this Easter it will not be possible to collect food for distribution by Olivet. However, we know that the need is even greater than normal now with the ongoing shutdown of business activity. These people are among those who are being hit the hardest by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Missions Committee has determined that we can still fulfill our mission with Olivet and to our Bridge family by providing them with a Jewel Gift Card rather than a box of food. The hams have been acquired in bulk at cost from Kramer Foods in Hinsdale. We think a $60 gift card will approximate the value of the food that is included in the average food box.
Those who wish to participate in this important mission can do so by making a donation below. This system is completely safe; none of the information you enter on the form will leave HUMC except that required to verify your payment information with the card issuer (like any online transaction.)
Twenty-five hams are available for donation, and 52 half gift cards (to purchase twenty-six $60 cards) are available. Twenty-four $60 gift cards and hams and will be given to Olivet for distribution in their neighborhood. Two $60 cards and a ham will be given our Bridge family as there are four teenaged children in addition to the mother.
Once you have made your selections below, complete the payment information, and click SUBMIT at the bottom of the form. You will receive an email from HUMC confirming your donation. Anyone needing assistance to make the online donation can contact a member of the Missions Work Area at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Donations should be completed by Friday, April 3. Our original plan was to deliver the food boxes and hams to Olivet on Saturday, April 4. We will maintain that delivery plan unless it is not possible on that date. If we have to wait, the delivery will be as soon as practical after that. The delivery will be done by a limited number of persons from Missions.
