UMW Warming Ministry

Our UMW Warming Ministry to support Olivet United Methodist has been such a wonderful success so far, thanks to the generosity and support from our HUMC community. We made our first delivery to Olivet in late August which included children’s boots and over 25 fleece blankets.

On Saturday, September 29, we packed up huge piles of donations, including hundreds of warm clothing items and over 50 blankets, and delivered them to Olivet UMC. This helped to stock their annual fall “Community Day” where they distributed needed warm clothes and blankets along with serving a soup and sandwich lunch.

What’s next…?  We are now gathering warm clothes and blankets to deliver with our Thanksgiving food boxes we traditionally provide to Olivet. By this point, the weather will be heading toward another Chicago winter and the need for protection from cold and snow will be growing.  So, we need your ongoing support in continuing to donate “warming” items, especially in the following categories:

  • Children’s snow boots – all sizes
  • Snow suits – infants and toddlers
  • Adult winter coats/jackets (men & women) – both for adult use and “big” kids
  • Warm socks – for both children and adults
  • Work gloves – for men
  • Blankets, comforters and afghans

We will continue to gather donations in the 3 boxes in the Narthex labeled for:

  1. Snow boots and shoes
  2. Coats, jackets, scarves, hats, gloves/mittens
  3. Blankets, comforters and afghans

We are also planning another Intergenerational Craft event, sometime in early November (after the Resale…!) to make more fleece blankets for Olivet. Watch for more information regarding this fun event which yields wonderful warm blankets, but also lots of fun and Christian fellowship.
