Fireside Readers Book Discussion

The Fireside Readers is an informal book discussion group that welcomes all men and women who enjoy reading and stimulating discussion. Our next meeting will be on Monday, February 19 in the Fireside Room at 6:30 p.m. for dessert and coffee and discussion at 7:00 p.m.

Our next book is The Black Penguin, by Andrew Evans. As a lonely, misfit boy growing up in a strict Mormon family, Andrew immersed himself in reading National Geographic Magazine. After he achieved his dream of becoming a writer for the magazine, he decided to undertake a 12,000 mile journey by bus from Washington D.C. to the tip of South America and then fulfill his ambition to sail to Antarctica. Part memoir and part travel adventure, this is the story of the people he meets and the incredible landscapes he sees. He makes an unique discovery when he’s in Antarctica. The publishers says “This is a soulful quest to balance faith, family and self and reminds us that in the end our lives are defined by the roads we take, the places we touch, and those we hold dearest.”

The book is available at only six public libraries in our library system, but your library should be able to order it for you from another library system. It is available from Amazon on Kindle, in hardcover and paperback, and there are used copies available. Please contact Mary Ann Darnaby if you have questions.

Knit or Knot

Knit or Knot ladies at Wellness HouseThe Knit or Knot Ministry meets the third Wednesday of each month from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Fireside Room. During a time of fellowship, shawls, pillows, sweaters and blankets are created to comfort those in need and to celebrate life’s joys. Each piece becomes an expression of love – and the loving care of God who works through the crafters. As each piece of work reaches completion, it is passed around the circle and blessed by each crafter’s hands. Pictured are members donating hand-tied pillows for use at Hinsdale’s Wellness House.
